Design fit for beer tasting

The Area Two facility at Two Roads Brewing in Stratford, CT, presents an arresting blend of architectural vision and engineering prowess across its expansive 25,000-square-foot layout. One of the project’s most captivating features is its use of enormous curved glulam beams, designed to invoke the curvature of a barrel, a fitting motif for a venue dedicated to beer production and tasting.

The structure combines a retail space, bar, and tasting area, alongside its brewing operations, presenting unique requirements in terms of flow and utility. These multiple functionalities necessitated a nuanced approach to spatial design and structural integrity. The complexity was further intensified by the sheer scale of the project, making every detail—especially the intricate steel connections interfacing with the curved glulams—critical to the success of the build.

Our team navigated these complexities with precision, ensuring that the design was not only aesthetically compelling but also structurally sound and functional. Architects and general contractors alike will appreciate the level of technical expertise required to bring such a multi-faceted, large-scale project to fruition.

did you know?

What is glulam?

Glulam is short for “glue laminated”. Glue laminated timbers (GLT) are comprised of layers of lumber glued together with their grain following the length direction of the material.

This is a form of engineered lumber which provides greater flexibility when creating a design at scale. The moisture-resistant adhesive used to bond the layers also provide immense strength to the members and makes for an alternative with the same structural qualities as traditional steel.

Most people prefer the look of this natural material and when responsibly harvested the wood used in its construction becomes a more easily renewable resource.
